WhitePages.com Tribute to The Reverend Shredder

“He had a gift”
-Robin Williams

Ed Charon’s nickname was given to him by Robin Williams in 2003 when he appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The reason is because he was the 5 time defending phone book ripper. Ed passed away Sunday at the age of 71.

Ed could shred 56 white page directories in under 3 minutes. As you might imagine, Ed holds a special place in the heart of WhitePages.com. We believe that our service is so good that we have eliminated the need to have a printed white pages phone book and we were in awe of Ed’s ability to destroy them at such a rapid rate (1,120 an hour!) Was Ed such a big fan of WhitePages.com that he wanted to show the world what he thought of the printed version? Probably not, but one can’t help but recognize the symbolism in his actions and marvel at the passion for his craft.

Ed’s spirit will live on at WhitePages.com. We’ll carry on his tradition by continuing to create the online white pages. While not as exciting as ripping them to shreds, we will more gently “eliminate” the printed residential directory. The full article on Ed Charon is located at Oregonnews.com.

April Showers vs. May Flowers

Up here in the Pacific Northwest we love our rain. It’s either that or be unhappy for quite a few months of the year. So with that in mind, I’m happy to announce that April Showers reigns supreme over May Flowers for popularity; 6 to 1. To finish up the punchline however, Pilgrim trumps them both.

April is also the most popular first name that is also a month. There are 35K Aprils in our US database. Every month is represented except for February. Here they are in order of popularity:

What to name a leprechaun?

I’m not sure if the most famous leprechaun I can think of (”They’re always after me Lucky Charms”) has a name or not, so I’ve decided to look through our database and find a suitable name for a St. Patrick’s Day icon.

So while Valentino Love was a ‘gimme’ for King of Valentine’s Day, I’m down to two choices for St. Pat’s.

So let the great luck debate begin: Shanty Shamrock vs. Green Clover.

March Madness & Name Madness

Today starts the best tournament in all of sports. That means Dicky V will be seen…or heard rather…frequently over the next few weeks. There are 42 Richard Vitale’s in our database and I would guess that most of them will receive at least one comment or a “yea baby” directed their way during the tournament.

And what NCAA tournament is complete without a Cinderella story? There are 115 people named Cinderella in the U.S. Texas has the most Cinderellas with 11. So by our scientific and fool-proof analysis, Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders, at a 15 seed, will be the Cinderella story this year.

We Found Cupid!

Well…we found him as long as you’re looking for Cupid Alexander, Benjamin Cupid or a few other people whose first or last name is Cupid in the United States. There are nine people with Cupid as a first name and 109 with Cupid as a last name. New York is the state with the most Cupids, California has the most Hearts and Texas has the bulk of the Loves. So if you’re in one of those states, keep your eyes peeled this Valentine’s Day.

Oh…and WhitePages.com is crowning Valentino Love in Michigan as the King of Valentine’s Day. Congratulations Valentino!
