WhitePages Takes On Google and Bing for Local Business Search

WhitePages store locator feature allows you to locate information about multiple store locations with one click.

It’s search’s broken record: Google and Bing return crowded and irrelevant results. We see it all the time, and are sure you do, too. Today, I’m proud to announce the unveiling our new WhitePages Business Search as a simple and easy solution to the problem of business search.  We’ve been working tirelessly to bring you the most accurate contact information for 15 million local businesses across the U.S. in a simple, easy to use experience.  We also think you will love our innovative WhitePages Store Locator featuring one-click access to over 1 million popular national business chain locations in your neighborhood.

WhitePages store locator feature allows you to locate information about multiple store locations with one click.

We all can agree that search is messy. For example, a search for Target in “Seattle, WA” on Google produces:

  • Over 6,000 results
  • 6 irrelevant listings just on the first page
  • On Target Media, LLC. Which is obviously not Target.

A search for Target in Seattle on Bing produces:

  • Over 6 pages of results
  • 6 irrelevant listings on the first page alone
  • Brighton Elementary School. What does that have to do with Target?

A search for Target in Seattle on WhitePages:

  • 16 accurate listings, all in one place.

But we’ve taken search one step further: Gone are the days of scrolling through thousands of web results or using clumsy Store Locators on individual company websites.  Now users can simply search for the business chain they’re looking for or click on a Store Locator icon. Try it for yourself here - www.whitepages.com/business. We’ll only return the locations nearest you, along with information you want most – address, phone, and store hours. How easy is that?

And if you are still not convinced, watch this short video on how we beat out Google and Bing when searching for “Target” in “Seattle, WA”:

Once you find a business on WhitePages, it is easy share that listing with friends and family by emailing or texting a listing for free.  You’re also now able to share your favorite businesses with your friends on Facebook via the “like” button and to your followers on Twitter.

We are excited about this feature, and want to hear what you think of our new WhitePages Business Search and Store Locator features! We’ve already started to generate some buzz with these features – feel free to read more on TechFlash, Search Engine Land and Paid Content.

With all of the attention the growth of our Top 10 iPhone and Android apps have recieved, many of you may not know that WhitePages has a top 50 mobile website according to Comscore.  A large percentage of our mobile web users surprisingly have smart phones.  Surprising, considering that the industry would have us believe that everyone has moved on to apps, as Kevin Nakao mentions in his latest mobile web post on Mashable. We know that at times, it is just as convenient for you to use the mobile web as it is to find and download an app.  That is why our teams have been hard at work to give you options — Mobile Web and Apps.

Below are a few of the improvements.  Not all phones have advanced capabilities to support all features, but here are the highlights for many smart phones including iPhone and Android.

Auto complete to make life a little easier

  • Locate Me:  Press ‘Locate Me’ to quickly populate your current city and state, and to get directions from your local area.
  • Auto complete entry fields: Time saving feature that suggests common searches as you type.
  • User friendly app-like interface: Clean interface with more finger room for touch screen users.
  • Drop down menus: Let’s you navigate quickly between areas of the site.
We’re excited about the new look and feel of the m.whitepages site, and hope you are too! For a more extensive and visual review of the m.whitepages website, head to our YouTube channel and watch our WhitePages mobile website demo. And as we continue to refine and adapt our products to better suit your needs, we’re interested in your feedback. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think!

WhitePages for Android arrives!

Today marks the launch of the new WhitePages for Android application. In recent weeks there has been an Android explosion, and Google Android-powered phones are now available from almost every major US wireless carrier. AdMob recently noted that 20% of the smartphone market is now Android phones – that’s up from 2% just 8 months ago!

So, it’s not surprising that we’ve gotten a lot of requests to take the People Search, Business Search and Reverse Phone number search found in many of our other applications and make them available for Android phones. The new WhitePages app includes all of these features and more for free — and complements the Top 10 grossing Caller ID app that we released for Android earlier this year.

WhitePages Mobile for iPhone – New and Improved App!

At WhitePages, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how to make it simple for people to connect – any time, anywhere.  With mobile phones being the most common way that people connect, we began a concerted effort to offer new ways to use WhitePages on mobile phones.

This began with the launch of our WhitePages Mobile for iPhone application in August of 2008.  The app quickly shot up to the Top 5 of the App Store charts, and it was clear we had a hit! Since then, we expanded our mobile plans and tackled apps for Android, BlackBerry, and revamped m.whitepages.com.
