Caller ID By WhitePages for the Google Android Phone


Have you ever gotten a call on your mobile phone you didn’t recognize and debated whether to answer the call or not? The answer is probably yes! Maybe you’ve missed a call from someone important, or answered a call from someone you didn’t want to talk to. Sure, Caller ID works on traditional phones, but if you use a mobile phone (like most people), there wasn’t much you could do about it – until now.

Caller ID by WhitePages has just been released as a new application for the T-Mobile G1 Android phone (also known as the “Google phone”). Now you can find out who’s calling, instantly. Caller ID by WhitePages will search 200 million U.S. listings and display the results in seconds. Answer the calls you want, skip the ones you don’t. You’re in control.

Here’s a short video that demonstrates how it works.

Best of all, you’ll get a whole lot more than traditional Caller ID. In addition to seeing the caller’s name instantly (if it’s listed), you can:
– See the address or city and state where the phone is registered
– Look up and display the caller’s address using Google Maps
– Get notifications for calls you miss, and store numbers in a list for later reference
– With one tap, add the caller’s name and number to your phone Contact List — and even sync with your Google Contacts account online

So how can you get it? First you need the new Google G1 Phone on T-Mobile. Once you have that, simply download our free application from the Market icon on the phone menu. Look in the Reference category, or search for WhitePages. Make sure that you are on T-Mobile’s 3G Network or have a Wi-Fi connection, and you’re good to go.

    Thanks for the comments! The reason it doesn’t work on EDGE has to do with the phone and network, which are things we can’t change. The details are probably too technical for this blog, but if you want to know more, just drop me a line. Thanks again…

    I dont have 3G in my area, and didn’t realize it wouldn’t work on the edge network until i got on this post. But the reason i got on this post, is because the app was causing my in-call touch tones not to work. So, basically i couldn’t even use my voicemail. Deactivated the app and now I’m good.

    This is probably one of the best apps for the Android. Definitely a must have. Is there any chance of it being open sourced?

    It’d be great to be able to look up missed calls. (for instance, if my phone is locked and the wifi is not connected, then the caller id won’t work – but if I could then look up the person who tried to call me..)

    Overall great app – unobtrusive, and it provides a great service!

    Hi Killarny — thanks for the good words! We aren’t currently planning on open sourcing the app. Great suggestion to be able to look up missed calls (this would also be handy for text messages). We are looking at adding this in the next version of the app.

    Would love to buy it, but I have a dev phone and jesus^H^H^H^H^H google has told me I am not allowed to pay for apps. OH WELL. Sorry. I’m one of the few that actually spends money on things I like. Tell google to let developers download paid apps.

    Juniper, sorry to hear you can’t purchase from your dev phone. You can contact our customer support (“Send email to developer” from the Android Market app page) if you’d like us to look into it further.

    Thanks Markus. Yes, some other people have mentioned this. We found out there was an issue unrelated to the app that was affecting some users of the Android Market, but it should be working better now. Please give it another try and let us know how it goes.

    Hi Beth – there are two versions of the app. The Lite version is free, and the full version is $6.99 for 6 months. The full version includes mobile and unpublished numbers, as well as a reverse phone feature so you can look up unlimited numbers any time. Hope this helps!

    This application is really BAD. They say it requires 3G and WiFi connection. What they don’t say is the application requires a 3G or WiFi connection 100% of the time. Remember 100% of the time. If you do not have a 3G or WiFi connection the application will LOCK up your Android Phone, Lose your call, Lose your call record and FORCE you to reboot your phone. The only support answer is you are REQUIRED to have a 3G or WiFi connection 100% of the time. There is NO other support at all. IT YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO ANSWER YOUR CALLS 100% OF THE TIME DO NOT BUY OR INSTALL THIS APPLICATION.

    I purchased the program a few weeks ago and it was working great. Suddenly, I have this weird issue. Whenever my phone rings, the apps starts up, disconnects my 3g and then says 3g is not available. After the call, the apps goes away and the 3g comes back.

    I was wondering if there is any chance I could sync my purchased mobile app on my T-Mobile G1 Android phone with the perks it has (cellphone caller ID) with this account on here? Each time I try it takes me to another company. Please email me! Let me know! lol Have a nice day.

    Hi Jim – a few people have reported problems with downloads. Apparently this is an issue with Google’s delivery system for many apps. Here’s a fix:
    1) Cancel the download (if you haven’t already)
    2) Select “IM” from the main phone menu
    3) Select Google Talk. If Gtalk login fails, try again – it should work after 1 or 2 attempts
    4) Return to Android Market, select “My Downloads” and select the “Caller ID” app, press “Install”
    Download should proceed normally and install. Sounds crazy — but it usually works. Let us know if it doesn’t…

    HI Abe – great question. Currently there isn’t a way to access the same results on our main website that you get on the Caller ID app. However, we’re working towards bringing these two worlds closer together and this is a great suggestion for how we could do that. Thanks!
