Stair Climbing Employee Wellness Challenge – Finished!

susanI wanted to give you the results of our first Wellness Challenge of 2009 that I wrote about in this wellness post .  The challenge is now complete andmt-fuji1 it was a great experience.  In total the WhitePages team climbed 29,780 flights of stairs, which is an average of 465 flights per participant. WOW! The “Stairketeers” were our winning team with a whopping 5,927 flights with an average of 988 flights per team member!  That means, on average, each Stairketeers team member climbed the equivalent of Mt. Fuji.  The top individual climbed over 40,000 feet – I’ve never even flown that high in an airplane.

Absolutely amazing!  But, what can I say, when a WhitePager puts their mind to something, “They’re on a Mission” and nothing is going to stop them.

So how did we get involved in these types of activities? Maybe if I go back to the beginning a little bit, this might make a more sense. On February 1st we announced the roll out of our 2009 Wellness Program. See WhitePages believes that if we not only invest in great benefit plans for reactive care but also add in the preventative proactive component, it’s a win/win for everyone and everyone is happy!  So, as part of this wellness initiative we partnered with Healthyroads, a company that specializes in corporate wellness. (Check out their website www.healthyroads.com …pretty cool stuff!  I have an Actiped that wirelessly down loads my activity daily…do you?? OK, enough of that…let’s get back on track.)

To participate in the wellness program at WhitePages, you take a simple personal health assessment to get a “wellness” benchmark. From there you can target different programs, activities, online courses, exercise routines, etc. to help you reach whatever your wellness goal(s) may be. Maybe it’s just to eat healthier (did I mention we have fresh fruit and veggies available in our break rooms?…FREE!). We also sponsor “workplace challenges” to challenge people to modify their behavior to promote a healthier lifestyle approach (such as the Stair Climbing challenge). These challenges are determined by our Wellness Committee, a group of employees for the employees! In May we are promoting a “Bike to Work” challenge.  Oh and did I mention for participating in the wellness initiative we, the employees, get a monthly stipend to “support” our wellness habits….yeah, you read it right, WhitePages PAYS you for doing the right thing!

WhitePages isn’t alone in embracing Employee Wellness.  Workplace Wellness is becoming a focus for many companies even in this economic downturn.  Please let me know what your company is doing to promote employee wellness.

Susan
